As a single mother to four young daughters and a postgraduate student navigating a divorce, I embarked on the path of leadership with unyielding determination. My story underscores the growth a leader can achieve even amidst adversity. Along this challenging journey, I founded and nurtured a business from scratch, and I’ve realised that mastering leadership is not just a skill; it’s a lifeline.

  • Effective communication has been my greatest ally in balancing my parent, and entrepreneur roles. I’ve learned to navigate life with a clear unwavering vision. Through this process, I’ve discovered the incredible power of clear honest communication and courage. It helps me convey my expectations and encourages open and honest dialogue with those around me.
  • Adaptability has been my secret weapon in the face of constant change. As I pursued my postgraduate degree, juggled family responsibilities, and managed a growing business, adaptability became my survival instinct. Embracing change allowed me to pivot and find creative solutions when obstacles arose. It’s not always easy, but it’s essential for staying on course amid life’s unpredictable twists and turns.
  • Empathy, born from my challenges, has been pivotal in my leadership journey. Understanding the diverse personalities of everyone in my life and my business has allowed me to connect more deeply. My Family and my Team knows that I genuinely and honestly care about their well-being, and this has fostered a sense of trust, care, commitment and respect.
  • Delegation became a cornerstone as I learned to let go of some tasks to balance my many responsibilities. Entrusting capable team members with specific roles freed me to focus on my postgraduate studies and my family without compromising the success of my business. It’s a lesson in humility and trust that every leader should embrace.

Throughout my journey, I’ve embraced continuous self-improvement. Being a single mother and a business owner is a relentless test of my abilities, but it’s also a source of inspiration. I’ve sought opportunities for growth through leadership seminars, relevant literature, and the wisdom of experienced mentors. Every lesson learned has strengthened not only my leadership skills but also my character.

In conclusion, my story hopefully demonstrates the incredible growth a leader can achieve amidst adversity. As a single mother navigating a divorce while pursuing a postgraduate degree and building a business from the ground up, I discovered the transformative power of effective communication, adaptability, empathy, delegation, and a relentless pursuit of self-improvement. These skills have made me a better leader and empowered my children and my team to achieve remarkable results.
